William R. Grichar, Jr., 73, of West Newton, passed away Monday, April 21, 2025, peacefully at Shadyside Hospital. He was born March 1, 1952 in Gratztown, son of the late William and Viola (George) Grichar. After enlisting in the Army, he served three years active duty as an MP. Bill had 20 years of service with West Newton Police Department, with 10 years as chief. He also served part-time with Rostraver Township and Sutersville Boro Police. Bill retired as a deputy with the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office. He was a big sports fan, especially the Steelers; and loved fishing, hunting, floating down the river, and spending time with his dog, Lilly. Surviving are his wife, Frances (Kopko) Grichar; sister, Cheryl L. MacDonald; niece, Allison Markle and husband, Ben, and their son, Bennett; two stepdaughters, Melissa Zhang and husband, Gary, and Dana Johnson; two step grandchildren, An-Mei and Michael Zhang, who he dearly loved. As per Bill’s wishes there will be no visitation. Private burial will be in West Newton Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the J. William McCauley, Jr. Funeral Home, West Newton.
