Martha W. Albig, 98, of West Newton, died Thursday, December 31, 2020. She was born April 15, 1922 in Freeport, a daughter of the late Herbert and Gertrude (O’Brien) Welsh. Known to many as Marsha, she was a proud Registered Nurse, Lifetime Member of the Republican National Committee, bird watcher and an avid vegetable gardener. She served her country welding ships during WWII. Known to the family she loved as the life of the party, she was often seen at family gatherings surrounded by nieces, nephews, and other family eagerly awaiting her colorful quips. She adored them all. Though her short-term memory waned in her final months, her spirits were high as she constantly expressed gratitude for her health, family and life. This gentle soul has moved on. Surviving are three children, Karen Albig Smith, Brian W. Albig and wife, Cheryl, and Mary Jane Starr and husband, Jordan; grandchildren, Ashley Smith, Allison (James) Kimmel, Brian (Jane) Albig, Amanda (Chris) Schardt, and Dylan Starr; great grandchildren, Grace, Luke and Brody Kimmel, and Jack and Riley Albig; and a sister, Helen Ward. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, E. Earl Albig, Jr; brothers, Patrick and Robert Welsh; and sisters, Alice Eichenholtz, Kathleen Stepp, and Mary Jane Meyer. As per Martha’s wishes, there will be no visitation or services. Arrangements entrusted to the J. William McCauley, Jr. Funeral Home, West Newton.
