John “Jack” Audley Paterline, 77, of West Newton, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, April 3, 2026 at Jefferson Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born November 5, 1948, in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Melvin Paterline and Josephine (Romanak) Paterline.
Jack was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in West Newton. He was a 1966 graduate of West Newton High School and earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Edinboro University. Jack worked at the Belle Vernon Area School District for 42 years, where he served as both a principal and dedicated classroom teacher. Outside of his career in education, Jack truly enjoyed instructing spin and fitness classes at the Center for Fitness and Health.
He was an avid fisherman who especially enjoyed spending time on his boat. Known for his understated and perfectly timed sense of humor, Jack had a unique way of making those around him laugh. His quiet remarks often brought great joy to those fortunate enough to hear them.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah (Dufalla) Paterline; his three children, Christopher Paterline; Nicholas Paterline and his fiancée, Toni Kayton, of Rostraver; and Jamie (Paterline) Howser and her husband, Jesse, of Rostraver; as well as his two grandchildren, Tobias and Remington Howser.
He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Paterline (Lonna) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; his sisters, Peggy (Paterline) Clark of Rochester, New York, and Kathryn Paterline of West Newton; his sisters-in-law, Donna Sayrs of Delray Beach, Florida, Victoria Paterline of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Rosetta Dufalla of Cranberry Township; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Tony Paterline; his sister and brother-in-law, Roma (Paterline) and Steven Cochenour; and his brothers-in-law, Elmo Clark, Paul Sayrs and Harry Dufalla.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, at the J. William McCauley, Jr. Funeral Home, 901 Vine Street, West Newton. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, with interment to follow in the West Newton Cemetery.
