Helen (Keegan) Mortle, 102 of Sutersville, died peacefully on March 6, 2021. She was born October 18, 1918 in Sutersville, a daughter of the late Michael and Rosa (Matiska) Keegan. Helen was a member of former St. Charles Catholic Church of Sutersville and then Holy Family Church of West Newton. After many years of employment she retired from the Sutersville Post Office in 1979. She was an active, community-minded member and volunteered for various community groups. She volunteered at the Ladies Auxiliary for over 40 years and was their Treasurer for most of that time. She also volunteered for Catholic Christian Mothers Society in Sutersville and West Newton doing various jobs such as helping with the bingo games, cooking and serving their members. In addition she was an active member of the Sutersville Senior Citizens and for several years was their appointed Treasurer. During election time she volunteered at the polls. She loved to travel to faraway places such as Ireland and to visit her family in other states. Later in life she enjoyed attending social activities such as playing bingo and cards at friends’ homes and at the senior citizens group in West Newton. Surviving are her two children, Deb Kurtz (husband Ron) and Cindy McMinn; 3 grandchildren, Erica (husband Robert), Keri (husband Ameet) and Jamie (husband Rob); 5 great grandchildren Justin, Ella, Eli, Ethan and Naveen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Mortle; 10 brothers, Michael, Joseph, Raymond, Charles, John, August, James, Lawrence, Regis, and Terry; and four sisters, Mary, Margret, Anna Rose and Theresa. Friends and family will be received Tuesday, March 9 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME, 901 Vine St., West Newton. Masks must be worn and social distancing be maintained. The amount of people permitted in the funeral home at one time 40, so please limit your visit out of respect for others. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10 in Holy Family Church, West Newton. Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery.
