Helen Gara Obituary

Helen Louise (Dave) Gara, 94, of West Newton, died Monday, February 15, 2021.  “Aunt Helen”, as many folks called her, was born September 12, 1926, on West Side, the youngest child of Mike and Annie (Hanna) Dave.  Helen graduated from West Newton High School and worked at Standard Railway Fusee and as a waitress at Sweeney’s Restaurant.  She was a member of West Newton United Presbyterian Church, where she frequently served as a reader for Sunday worship services and was a member of the women’s association; and also volunteered at the AME Food Bank.  Helen was fondly called the “Bicycle Lady” because for years her blue bicycle was her primary means of transportation.  She was also known as the “Flower Lady” because of the beautiful gladioli she raised and graciously shared with many local business establishments and friends.  Her flowers were very special, especially her “green gladioli”.  Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Gara in 1998; siblings, Samuel, Charles, John, Philip, Sara Messner, Anna Jordan, and Kathryn Leasure.  There will be no public viewing.  A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to West Newton Presbyterian Church.  The family would like to thank Dr. Kad and the staff on 3 AB at Westmoreland Hospital and the staff at St. Anne Home.  Arrangements are entrusted to the J. William McCauley, Jr. Funeral Home, West Newton.  Condolences may be left at http://www.mccauleyfuneralhome.com.
