On October 10, 2024, with his wife and daughter by his side at his home in Delray Beach, Fred Ardillo left his earthly body to forever groove on the streets of gold. He was one day shy of his 73rd birthday.
Fred was born on October 11, 1951 to Fred and Geraldine (Rizzo) Ardillo. Fred’s lifelong appreciation for nature began during his childhood in North East, Pennsylvania, where he grew up on Lake Erie with his sister Rose and many cousins and friends. After graduating from North East High School, Fred hitch-hiked to Penn State, where he obtained his degree in music theory and composition and where he met his wife Vinnie. Fred and Vinnie embraced life together, living in Erie, Boston, and New York, all of which brought great times and great music with great friends. The pair settled back in Erie before son Vincent was born in 1987, followed by daughter Gina in 1989. The early 1990s took the Ardillo crew to Akron, where the love and laughter continued for more than 20 years before the family finally landed in South Florida.
Fred fought fiercely for his time on this earth. As a 30-year survivor of esophageal cancer, his life was marked with a variety of medical complications, each of which he battled through trial and error with new doctors, new diets, and new treatments. Although his health struggles consumed much of his energy, he defined his life by the magic of music and love.
Nothing brought Fred more joy than sharing the thing he loved the most with the people he loved the most. Fred was a natural at creating community through drum circles, whether he was in the center facilitating or teaching others to lead. A jazz man at heart, Fred’s happy place was in front of a keyboard surrounded by family and friends, many of whom have fond memories of joining him on stage or at home for a jam session.
Although Fred will be remembered for his music, perhaps his greatest legacy is the uninhibited authenticity in the way he lived his life. Fred was true to himself in everything he did, and at the center of that was his unbreakable bond with his family. Together, the family celebrated the best of days – the days where Fred would laugh so hard that a tear or two would leak out of his eyes. The worst of days of Fred and Vinnie’s 48 years of marriage were also faced together, as a family, united by unconditional love. His human body may have died, but the steadfast love between Fred and his family will live forever.
Fred joins his son Vincent and his parents in heaven. He is survived by wife Vinnie (Clement) Ardillo, daughter Gina Ardillo (Victor Alber), sister Rose (Aaron) Cook, nephews Brian (Angel) Herring and Jeremy Cook, and nieces Nicole (Keith) Kelly, Christine (Evan) Levine, and Kathleen (Ken) Adams. He is already so very missed by countless loved ones, and we place our hope in the day when we join him in paradise.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am, Friday, June 20, 2025 in Holy Family Church, 225 N. Second St., West Newton.
Arrangements are entrusted to the J. William McCauley, Jr. Funeral Home, West Newton. Condolences may be left at http://www.mccauleyfuneralhome.com.
