Frances M. “Fannie” (Zupanc) Tekavec, 98, of West Newton, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, surrounded by her loving family and precious poodle, Daisy. She was born March 26, 1923 in Yukon, a daughter of the late Frank and Justina (Zalakar) Zupanc. Fannie lived a very active life and attended Holy Family Roman Catholic Church where she sang in the choir. She also sang in the “Savica” Slovenian singers at Carnegie Music Hall, and played various instruments, especially her father’s button box. An 80 year member of the SNPJ, where she enjoyed many activities, especially polkas, Slovene Fest, Pensioneers’ Week and the Slovenian radio program. She was a proud Slovenian! An excellent cook and baker, she was known for her bread, potica and sausage, and loved to crochet and garden. Along with her husband, she was the owner and operator of Jack’s by the Tracks since 1956, and was then joined with her son, Jack, in running the business, finally retiring at the age of 96. Surviving are her children, Jack, Sandra (Larry) Chopp and Patricia (Randy) Hesson, all of West Newton; grandchildren, Jack (Penny) and Jeff Tekavec, Danielle (Bob) Hitson, Jaimee (David) Greenawalt and Jeremy Hesson; great grandsons, Joseph and David Tekavec and Bobby and Nicholas Hitson; great great grandson Lucas; brother, Victor Sperotto; sisters-in-law, Jean, Reta and Betty; daughter-in-law, Janet Halle; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob in 1986; grandsons, Larry Chopp, Jr and Joshua Hesson; siblings, Michael Evans, Edith Lovato, Frank and Fred Zupanc, Albina Makarky and Leveo Sperotto. Friends will be received 2-4 & 6-8 pm Friday at the J. William McCauley, Jr. Funeral Home, 901 Vine Street, West Newton. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am Saturday in Holy Family Church.
