David R. Backstrom

David R. Backstrom, Jr., 71, of West Newton, died Monday, August 15, 2022.  He was born March 21, 1951, a son of the late David R. and Esther V. (Hand) Backstrom, Sr.  Dave was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, West Newton, where he served on the trustee board for over 20 years.  He was the owner of Geotechnics for 35 years.  A proud community servant and avid Pitt fan, Dave enjoyed riding his bicycle, walking, golfing and boating.  Surviving are his wife, Cheryl (Dabin) Backstrom; children, Lisa Backstrom and Bryan Backstron and fiancée, April; grandchildren, Lucas and Mila King; brother, Dana Backstrom and wife, Roiann; sister, Darlene Deem and husband, Danny; and nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Backstrom.  Friends will be received 2-4 & 6-8pm Thursday at the J. William McCauley, Jr. Funeral Home, 901 Vine Street, West Newton.  A funeral service will be held at 10 am Friday in First Baptist Church, Vine and 6th St, West Newton.  Everyone is asked to go directly to church.  Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, West Newton or the Westmoreland County Food Bank.  Condolences may be left at http://www.mccauleyfuneralhome.com.
