Janice McConnell Obituary

Janice L. McConnell, 83, of West Newton, died Friday, January 25, 2019.  She was born August 27, 1935 in Gary, Indiana, a daughter of the late Charles and Ruth (Todd) McConnell.  Prior to retirement she was the first female athletic director at California University, where she was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.  Making a relevant personal goal for equal playing conditions, regardless of gender, was her passion.  She enjoyed skiing, tennis, field hockey, and golf.  Jan was an avid reader and enjoyed classical music and opera.  After retirement she did volunteer work and was a nature and animal lover.  Surviving are sisters-in-law, Roberta D. McConnell and Lois McConnell; nieces and nephews, Michael Mayhak and wife, Shelly, Steven McConnell, Jeffry McConnell and wife, Beth, Joyce McKenzie and husband, Thad, Laurie Smith and husband Charles, Sharon Bollenbacher, and Robert McConnell and wife, Claudia; numerous great nieces and nephews; her beloved cat, Brandi; and many good friends.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Ruth Mayhak; and brothers, Charles B. McConnell Jr. and Alan F. McConnell.  A memorial service will be held at 11 am Saturday in the chapel of West Newton United Presbyterian Church, 4th and Main St., West Newton.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Animal Friends or a charity of your choice.  Arrangements entrusted to the J.
